Pedestrian critically injured after being struck by car in downtown Akron

AKRON, Ohio — A 39-year-old man was in critical condition Monday after he was struck by a car while crossing a downtown street near the University of Akron, police say.

The man was hit at about 7:39 a.m. on East Exchange Street between Allyn and Sumner streets. He was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center. He reportedly was in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

The 42-year-old woman driving the car that struck the man remained at the scene and is cooperating with police. Alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors.

Police did not release further details.
