Kernels take fourth place at Watertown dual tournament

Dec. 4—WATERTOWN, S.D. — The Mitchell High School wrestling team split its quartet of dual contests on Saturday at the Marv Sherrill Dual Tournament at the Watertown Civic Arena.

Mitchell defeated Canby, Minnesota, in its opening dual by a 38-35 score and took down Huron, 36-34, but lost the pool play finale against Watertown, 75-5. In the third-place match, Aberdeen Central defeated the Kernels, 70-10.

Jagger Tyler led the way for Mitchell in the duals, going 4-0 in his matches at 160 and 170 pounds. He hit for the wrestling cycle for the day — scoring wins by decision, major decision, technical fall and by pin — in his four matches. Kale Hofer (106), Cruze Allhiser (113), Seth Foote (195) and Connor Degen (220) each had two wins for Mitchell.

In the girls portion of the tournament, the Kernels' Danny Borja and Frankie Kranz had impressive performances, each winning three matches by pinfall. For Borja, those included two pins in under a minute and a 13-second fall over Watertown's Jeryn Fieber. Kranz won two matches with second-period pins and defeated Watertown's Harlie Thiewes with a 28-second pin. Emma Trode had a 1-2 day, which included a 38-second pin over Aberdeen Central's Kalyn Rohrbach. The girls portion was wrestled in a scramble format and did not have set brackets.

Tea Area won the boys team title with a 41-31 victory over Watertown.

The Kernels (3-2 in duals) steps away from dual action until Dec. 15 when they visit Huron, but will head to the Rapid City Invitational on Dec. 9 and 10.
