'The rats are everywhere': Tenant takes extermination into her own hands

Family members attack and kill rats with broomsticks

A Milwaukee tenant at 31st and Wells streets says she’s had enough with a rat infestation in her apartment. When WISN 12 News visited Monday, nine dead rats could be seen piled on the floor of a bedroom, and the resident said it's just the tip of the iceberg."The rats are everywhere. We're scared to go to the bathroom. We're scared to go to the kitchen, everywhere, it's a lot," said the tenant Dalyvette Baez, who moved into the apartment in 100-year-old building in August. "I had to throw a lot of clothes away. And this dresser right here, I don't touch it no more, because when I go through to look for clothes or something, they come out. It's really scary," she said. After complaining to her landlord for weeks, Baez said she tried traps and poisons, but after still seeing so many around the house, she decided to turn to her family for help. In a video they shared with WISN 12 News, several family members can be seen chasing the rats, killing them with broomsticks and metal rods. Even during the interview with Baez, twice rats were seen scurrying across the floor. "It's really bad. It's like living in the street," said Dalyvette's brother Jose Baez. He said he was glad to glad to help with rats, but knowing there are likely many more still living, said he is concerned for his sister and her kids. " Sometimes they stay in my house, or in my other sister's house, and they're trapped. They can't handle this no more,” Jose Baez said.Dalyvette Baez said she's looking for a new apartment. "It is hard for me to get an apartment for me and my kids, you know, and I love my apartment. I love my apartment, it's just they're not trying to do nothing, and I cannot live no more here with these rats," she said. Baez said she's repeatedly reported the issue to her landlord, Berrada Properties in Milwaukee. The company owns approximately 8,000 rental units in the area. They didn’t respond to repeated requests for comment Monday.
