School districts across the nation are dealing with higher diesel fuel prices, which many school buses use.
The average cost per gallon of diesel in Alabama is $4.78.
That's about thirty-five cents higher than this time last year.
Talladega City Schools said they are paying around $3.50 per gallon of diesel to fuel up buses.
However, school leaders said, that's about fifty cents cheaper than a month ago.
All of Talladega City School buses run off diesel fuel and they have made cost cutting decisions to lower their demand for fuel.
They have combined bus routes to cut costs, but parents will have to pay more for their child for events off campus.
The school district is required by law to charge around $1.85 per mile for field trips and off campus extracurricular activities.
That's fifty cents more than last year, according to Transportation Supervisor Wanda Cochran.
"Well if they go on field trips, then the school sponsors, (organization hosting the event) they're responsible for paying that," said Cochran.
"Our fuel prices go up; it costs us more to run our school buses. So, we have to pass that along if you're going on a field trip or any extracurricular activity," she added.
Thirty minutes away, Oxford City Schools has converted twenty-five percent of their 65-school bus fleet into gasoline run busses, an idea Talladega City Schools is not opposed to.
"It makes it harder or more expensive to run a diesel bus. So, I could see in the future to go to gas buses," said Cochran.
