MINOT, N.D. – It was a battle of top-five teams this weekend up in North Dakota as No. 3 Midland University traveled to take on No. 5 Minot State University. The teams, which had faced one another three weeks prior, split the series with the Warriors winning 2-1 on Friday and the Beavers winning 4-3 in overtime on Saturday.

FRIDAY: Midland 2, Minot State 1

After falling behind by a goal in the opening period, Midland scored twice on the power play in the second to take control of the game. Just under three minutes into the second stanza, Callie Maguire found the back of the net off a feed from Kayla Flanigan. After a second penalty against the Beavers a mere two minutes later, Maguire lit the lamp again. Ally Rakowski and Jenna Grosdidier assisted on the goal which would prove to be the game-winner.

In net, Hannah Stone collected 32 saves while the Warriors peppered her counterpart with 18 shots on the afternoon.

SATURDAY: Minot State 4, Midland 3 (OT)

In the series finale, Minot State once again took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. They would add a second goal less than a minute into the second, scoring at the 37-second mark on a carryover penalty from the first.

The Warriors settled in and worked their way onto the scoreboard at the five-minute mark. Ally Rakowski pushed the puck past the goalie with Kayla Flanigan and Kamryn Hayhurst picking up assists on the goal.

Less than a minute later, the game was tied up as Jenna Grosdidier scored off an assist from Callie Maguire. The teams were knotted at 2-2 after 40 minutes of skating.

In the final period, the Beavers broke out in front again. At the 15:39 mark, they pushed their way past the Warriors’ defense to make it 3-2.

With time winding down, Minot State was called for a roughing penalty with less than a minute to go. Midland added to the man advantage by pulling their goalie to make it a six-on-four for the final 44 seconds. The strategy paid off as Maguire found the hole in the defense and scored the game-tying goal with five ticks on the clock, sending the game into overtime.

Three minutes into overtime, Minot State made good on their third shot on net, scoring the game-winner.

Kayla Bailey played just over 62 minutes in net, picking up 21 saves on the night.

“Coming all the way up to Minot to play two games is always a challenge,” commented head coach Jason White. “Outside of the long bus ride, you’ve got a quality, highly-ranked opponent waiting for you who plays well in front of their fans. To be able to come away with a split is exceptional. We’ve had a tough schedule this semester and the ladies have played well. We’ll give them time to get rested up and get their classes wrapped up now. We’ve got a lot of hockey left to play next semester against quality teams.”

Midland (14-4-2) will settle into the student aspect of being a student-athlete now as the semester winds down. Their next game will come after the turning of the calendar to 2023 when they host the University of Jamestown (5-10-0) on January 14-15.
