Most tornado prone Alabama counties in 2022
Late November storms added insult to injury in Greene and Hale Counties. An EF-2 tornado struck before 10 PM on the 29th just east of the Greene County rest area on I-20/59, skirted along the north side of Eutaw, and traveled a total of 19.5 miles to the south side of Moundville in Hale County.
Last week's EF-2 tornado made ten: ten total tornadoes in Greene and Hale Counties since January First.
That's a lot for two relatively small West Alabama counties.
Greene County only had 18 confirmed tornadoes from 1950 to 2021; Hale County had 41 in that same period. That means the land area making up the two counties experiences around 1 tornado per year (using a simple average).
Tornadoes this calendar year account for 14% of all tornadoes in that area since 1950.
Two EF-2 (strong ) tornadoes on the Enhanced Fujita Scale hit this area in 2022, and one of them killed one and seriously injured two more in rural Hale County on the night of February 2nd.
While Greene and Hale Counties have had the most tornadoes in Central Alabama this year, Mobile and Baldwin Counties have the most over-all. Most of them very short-tracked, low-end twisters.
