Former Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Robert Dewberry has opted out of the Drug Court, according to filings in the case on Monday.
Dewberry is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on December 22, 2022, on possession of controlled substance charges.
According to Sheriff Huey Hoss Mack, Dewberry reported for his shift around 6 pm on November 15.
Investigators contacted him and found Kratom, an herbal stimulant illegal in Alabama, and methamphetamine in his patrol vehicle.
Dewberry was removed from his shift. During the subsequent investigation, deputies found more of the same drugs at his home.
At that time, BCSO immediately terminated Dewberry and following the investigation, he was arrested.
Dewberry was arrested and charged with 1 count of 1st degree possession of a controlled substance.
He was transported to the Baldwin County Corrections Center around 11 p.m. and bonded out just before 4 a.m. on Friday.
Dewberry had been with the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office since October 2020 and had no previous issues with the agency.
According to Sheriff Mack, there is no indication he was using drugs while on duty, but they are concerned that he had them in his patrol vehicle.
According to the Baldwin County jail log, Dewberry was previously arrested in 2009 for possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, minor in possession of alcohol, and an unspecified traffic charge.
The Baldwin County District attorney’s office says a review of Dewberry’s cases is underway to see if his arrest compromises the cases.
