'Feisty' Long-Nosed Potoroo Ready for Life Without Mom A “fiesty” eight-month-old long-nosed potoroo is now ready for a life without mom, keepers at Aussie Ark in Tomalla, New South Wales, said. Footage released by Aussie Ark shows keepers taking Pippin, a young male long-nosed potoroo, from his mother’s enclosure into his new, independent life with other mature females. Pippin was bred at Aussie Ark and is part of the park’s rewilding program, destined for release into the Barrington Wildlife Sanctuary. Aussie Ark operations manager Dean Reid conducted Pippin’s transfer and was pleased with his progress. “It was great to have Pippin in-hand today. He’s a feisty little man! This footage was taken by Tadhg O’Connor, who said he filmed it while working at a construction site near Oyen on April 23. It was the second dust devil sighting in less than a week for O’Connor, who saw one nearby the weekend before. Team Holds 18-Foot Python for Zoo Health Check Staffers at the Perth Zoo, in Western Australia, demonstrated their collaborative skills as several employees held an 18-foot Burmese python in place for a health check, in footage released by the zoo on Wednesday, April 24. This video shows the Burmese python, named Samorn, undergoing a health examination. According to the zoo, Samorn weighs 106 pounds (48 kg) and stretches to approximately 5.4 meters in length. “With an animal this big and strong, it took teamwork, expertise, and a whole lot of care to ensure this health check was safe and stress-free,” the zoo said. According to Perth Zoo, the vet team were able to conduct thorough checks of her body condition and mobility, take X-rays from head to tail, draw blood samples and take swabs for viral testing. “Vets say she’s in ssssspectacular health,” the zoo wrote. Swan Swims as Spring Snow Falls on Helsinki Spring snow fell on Helsinki, Finland, on Wednesday, April 24, following record snowfall earlier in the week, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute. The Finnish Meteorological Institute said in a press release that between 10-20 centimeters (about 4-8 inches) fell on the southwestern part of the country between Monday and Tuesday. Pauli Jokinen, a meteorologist at the weather institute, said a record-breaking 21 centimeters (8.3 inches) was observed at Nurmijarvi, north of Helsinki. “In the southwestern part of the country, it has never snowed so much in a day so late in spring,” Jokinen said in the release.
