DETROIT (WWJ) – The Southfield Freeway has reopened on Detroit’s northwest side after Michigan State Police closed it to investigate a shooting on the freeway Monday afternoon.

MSP officials say an 18-year-old woman and her 20-year-old boyfriend were shot at while driving southbound on M-39 near Grand River Avenue around 2:15 p.m. Monday.

The victims' vehicle was hit twice after someone fired shots from a black SUV, according to MSP.

Investigators found multiple shell casings on the freeway during the initial investigation, which left the southbound lanes of the freeway closed between 8 Mile and McNichols Roads for nearly two hours.

Troopers recovered a pistol without a serial number from inside the victims' vehicle.

Authorities say no one was hurt in the shooting, which is not believed to be a random incident. No other details have been released.

The investigation caused a headache for many Metro Detroit drivers. Traffic tipsters told WWJ some drivers were finding themselves in the middle of the mess and trying to back up on the freeway, which officials advise against.

MSP officials said on Twitter they "will update the investigation as soon as we sort out a few more details."
