Two people suffered minor injuries after the elevator malfunction at the old Missoula library building on East Main Street. One person was transported to the hospital after Missoula firefighters evacuated the elevator.
The following was sent out by the city of Missoula:
Elevator technicians are working to repair an elevator in Missoula’s old public library building on East Main Street following a malfunction Monday morning.
Two people were inside the elevator shortly before 10 a.m. when it failed to stop and rose to the top of the building, hitting the stop mechanism abruptly. The occupants suffered minor injuries, and one was transported to medical care.
Personnel from the Missoula Fire Department arrived following a call at 9:55 a.m. They evacuated the elevator and evaluated the situation. Elevator technicians responded quickly and are working on the elevator.
The City of Missoula owns the old library building, following the donation of the entire 300 block of East Main Street by the Payne family of Missoula in 2019. It is home to multiple public programs run by the City and other organizations.
The elevator was recently inspected, on Sept. 6 of this year.
