Just before noon, the bus plowed some bushes through the shopping center’s parking lot near the Target store. It hit more than a dozen cars and sent four people to the hospital.

"You could tell it was going too fast," said Frank, who witnessed the driver lose control of the bus. "Then I saw the aftermath."

The bus damaged 16 cars in the parking lot and caused multiple injuries. One person was in critical condition of the four hospitalized.

"This was a big surprise," said Barbara Campos, who was inside shopping during the incident. She had driven her brother’s Toyota Land Cruiser to the mall that day, and the rear bumper was knocked off by the bus.

"But you know, I’m glad everybody’s good," she said, which is the most important thing. "You can buy another car, but you cannot buy life."

It's not yet clear what the cause of the collision was. There have been no further updates as of Monday.

On Friday, SamTrans issued the following statement:

"On behalf of SamTrans, we want to express our deepest sympathies to those who were impacted today. The safety of our riders, employees, and the public is always our highest priority and we pride ourselves on providing safe and reliable service. We are working with authorities and actively looking into the cause of this incident to figure out what went wrong and how it can be prevented in the future. We will provide a more thorough update once that investigation is complete. Our hearts continue to be with those who were impacted."
