SOUTHPORT, N.C. (WECT) - A Shop-with-a-Cop benefit concert for this year’s Southport Winterfest featured a performance from the Back Porch Rockers at Franklin Square Park on Monday, Dec. 5.

The event, sponsored by the Southport Police Department, accepted donations that will now go towards helping children and families have a happy holiday.

Police Chief Todd Coring says that the police department has 144 children to shop for this holiday season, and the concert is one event that brings the community together.

“It’s exciting. I cut my phone down and cut my radio off and just interact with our community, you know, we’re very community-oriented in Southport and I can, you know, I spend time thanking the folks that are here and the kids that are here, and it’s just a way we can kind of let our hair down if you will, and just have a little bit of fun with our community,” Chief Coring said.

The event closed up at around 8 p.m. with approximately 250 people attending and raising a total of $3,060.

Anyone who wants to help the police department’s efforts can donate at the City of Southport website. For more information about Shop with a Cop, you can contact the Southport Police Department Clerk here or by calling 910-457-7911.
