A bystander says a city sanitation worker is lucky to be alive after their street sweeper appeared to explode Monday morning.
The scene in Crotona Park East unfolded just before 9 a.m. Monday.
Video from witnesses shows the vehicle fully engulfed in flames.
The Department of Sanitation says thankfully no one was injured, including that driver.
A witness nearby said they sat with the driver after his narrow escape. "If you were walking past and it goes 'boom' right there, you don’t know what could’ve happened,” they said.
An investigation is underway into the cause of the fire.
