Carolina Panthers release quarterback Baker Mayfield

Baker Mayfield is done in Carolina.

The Panthers released the former No. 1 pick of the Cleveland Browns after less than a season with the AFC South team.

The final step in his time with the Panthers was when PJ Walker moved ahead of the Heisman Trophy winner from Oklahoma.

In seven games, he completed 57.8% of his passes for 1,313 yards, with six touchdowns and six interceptions, for a 74.4 rating.

The Panthers traded a conditional 2024 fifth-rounder to the Browns in July for the rights to Mayfield. That pick could have become a fourth-rounder in 2024 if he’d played 70% of the snaps, but he did not.

What is next for Mayfield? Could the San Francisco 49ers be interested after Jimmy Garoppolo was lost for the season on Sunday with a broken foot?

One would think Niners management would check in with former Panther Christian McCaffrey before making a move.

This has been a rough season in Carolina. Head coach Matt Rhule was fired earlier in the campaign.
