NOVI (WWJ) -- A fire tore through several mobile home units early Monday morning, leaving several families out in the cold and without a place to live.

Just after 2:30 a.m., the Novi Fire Department responded to the blaze at Country Cousin mobile home park on Haggerty, near 12 Mile Rd.

According to Novi Fire Chief Jeffrey Johnson, one building was already fully engulfed when crews arrived. Due to the close spacing of the units, a second and third mobile home also caught fire before the flames were doused.

Officials determined that the fire started in a shed, but the exact cause is still being investigated.

WWJ's Charlie Langton reported live from Country Cousin as firefighters were finally able to contain and extinguish the blaze.

Thankfully, all of the units' residents -- six in total -- were able to escape uninjured along with their pets.

"This is a very quiet community," Chief Johnson told Langton. "The residents did have working smoke alarms. I could hear them going off. That was good."

Though safe from the fire, these families are now without a home in below-freezing temperatures. Authorities are assisting them in finding somewhere to stay while they decide their next steps.
