Officers reportedly found 660 pounds (300 kilograms) of fentanyl pills packed inside coconuts in a truck in Mexico on Thursday, Dec. 1.

About 660 pounds (300 kilograms) of fentanyl pills packed into coconuts were found inside a truck traveling on a highway in the northern border state of Sonora on Thursday, Dec. 1. The road runs along the Gulf of California, also known as the Sea of Cortez, and eventually leads to the border town of Sonoyta, across the border from Lukeville, Arizona, New York Post reported.

When the officers checked the load inside the truck, they found that the coconut husks had been neatly split in half, and re-assembled with plastic bags of fentanyl pills inside.

Photos of the drug bust were released from the office of Mexico’s attorney general. The photos show a white box truck with a mound of coconuts beside it. In a video that was released, agents wearing gloves could be seen opening the coconuts to reveal plastic bags filled with the deadly narcotic. Following this, rows and rows of plastic bags containing fentanyl were then lined up on the pavement, ABC News reported.

Two people were arrested in connection with the incident.

Mexico reportedly produces most of the fentanyl that reaches the United States. Fentanyl is blamed for tens of thousands of U.S. overdose deaths each year. Fentanyl, the extremely powerful synthetic opioid, is pressed into counterfeit pills often made to look like Xanax, oxycodone, or Percocet. Many people who take the drug do not know that they are taking fentanyl.

In a similar but unrelated incident, a 15-year-old girl was reported dead after she allegedly overdosed on pills laced with fentanyl at a Los Angeles high school on Tuesday, Sept. 13, as previously reported.

The deceased girl, along with her friend, had gone to buy Percocet, which is a narcotic for pain, at Lexington Park. After ingesting the pill, the girls started feeling ill almost immediately and lost consciousness.

After the deceased girl's friend did not return home, her stepfather began driving around in search of her and found her collapsed in the courtyard of the campus. The girl then told her stepfather that she took half a pill she bought at Lexington Park and told him that her friend was in the women’s restroom.

The stepfather proceeded to contact a school employee and they found the 15-year-old student unresponsive of an apparent overdose.

Following this, officers responded to Helen Bernstein High School in the 1300 block of North Wilton Place in Hollywood and found the 15-year-old girl unresponsive. She was declared dead at the scene.
