The big story: Fallout from November’s school board elections continues a month later.

Today, the Brevard County board meets to work out details for the departure of superintendent Mark Mullins, who was forced out by the new School Board majority. Newly released details indicate he will leave effective Jan. 1, Spectrum 13 reports. Two of the superintendent’s top deputies announced they would retire in the wake of his resignation, Florida Today reports.

Further south, Gov. Ron DeSantis could get to make another appointment to the Broward County School Board. A candidate who won the Nov. 8 election has not been sworn in, because he previously was convicted of a felony and has not had his civil rights restored, WLRN reports.

Over on the west coast, a group of Collier County residents is pushing to remove a newly elected School Board member who has called for a return to corporal punishment and rolling back of LGBTQ student rights, the Naples Daily News reports.

Other school news

A Hillsborough County high school custodian and her family fell on hard times. Students at the school rallied to her support, aiming to raise $20,000 for the family, WFTS reports.

The Escambia County school district held an appreciation night for its employees. More than 1,300 people showed up, the Pensacola News-Journal reports.

Tropical Storm Nicole is gone, but still forcing schools to revamp their schedules. Broward County students will make up two days lost because of hurricane closures, TAP into Parkland reports. • The Martin County school district called off plans to shorten winter break, instead moving its hurricane makeup days into second semester, TC Palm reports.

The Palm Beach County school district is redrawing attendance zones in advance of opening a new high school. Officials have presented three possible maps, each of which could affect nearly 2,000 students, WPTV reports.

St. Lucie County is experiencing a population boom and classroom crowding. Plans are in place for the district to build three new schools to deal with the growth, WPTV reports.

The Monroe County school district is building affordable housing for employees. School Board members debated rental rates, with some concerned about whether the cost might exclude some lower-wage workers, the Florida Keys Weekly reports.

Former Florida university system chancellor Marshall Criser has landed a new gig. He starts as president of Piedmont University in Georgia on Jan. 1, Now Habersham reports.

From the police blotter ... An Okaloosa County school nurse was arrested on allegations of stealing students’ prescription medications, WKRG reports. • A security guard working at the Miami-Dade County school bus depot was arrested on allegations of stealing technology equipment from buses, WTVJ reports.
