Maple Heights Behavioral Health, 3955 W. Washington Center Road, celebrated the opening of the new hospital with a ribbon tying ceremony Nov. 30. Instead of a traditional ribbon cutting, the symbolic ribbon tying ceremony held in the gymnasium recognized a collaboration between Acadia Healthcare and Lutheran Health Network. Combining resources and clinical expertise the joint venture aims to serve the mental health needs of Fort Wayne and Northeast Indiana.
“What you see is the result of the vision, commitment and hard work of a great many people,” Jennifer Snyder, CEO, Maple Heights, said in her opening remarks.
The 85,000-square-foot facility is set up to provide comprehensive inpatient services to adults battling with various mental health issues including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Additionally, everyone from the executive leadership to the daily care staff is focused on helping patients lead their best lives.
“This is the why of this hospital: To reduce suffering, improve lives and reduce both the stigma of mental illness and improve access to needed care,” Dr Jeffrey Woods, group president, Acadia Healthcare, said. “To prevent the loss of life and to provide healing for those suffering among us. We are humbled and grateful to the hands and hearts that made this vision a reality.”
Lutheran Health Network and Acadia Healthcare announced a partnership committed to building a 120-bed mental health facility in March of last year. Groundbreaking for the $45 million facility was held in August. Over the coming weeks Maple Heights is completing various regulatory certifications required for new hospitals. The first patients are expected in January.
“Initially, we are only opening one unit with probably five to eight adult patients,” Jennifer Panaccio, manager of activity therapy, said.
According to a news release, patients are assessed on admission. Any emergency situations are stabilized. During treatment, patients can expect comprehensive medical services, restorative therapies and a welcoming atmosphere designed to meet their various needs.
“It is state-of-the-art and built for the treatment we are providing. So, it has lots of nice things like outdoor courtyards and a gym. We have the ability to provide a broad range of interventions for the patients,” Brooke Davis, director of clinical services, said.
Later, inpatient treatment for adolescents, seniors, and intensive outpatient programs are expected to be added. Also, a variety of treatments including detox and substance abuse therapies are expected to be implemented. Additionally, besides psychiatric care, restorative therapies including fitness programs and yoga are planned.
In conjunction with various treatments, a variety of activity rooms are available. From quiet spaces to noisier interactive group activity rooms all are designed to meet varying patient moods.
“A quiet activity room is available when patients want to engage in calmer activities. If they want to make a little more noise or interact with others there is a noisy activity room. We also have activity therapy. They can engage in recreational therapy, arts and crafts, music therapy, and they can use the gym, as well,” Panaccio said.
Besides a variety of rooms for different activity levels there is at least one room designed for complete quiet time.
“A comfort room is available when patients need to deescalate and calm down a little bit, if they are feeling agitated,” she said.
Acadia is the largest standalone behavioral health care company, and the leading provider of behavioral health care in the United States. It currently operates about 242 behavioral health care facilities with over 10,000 beds.
