Gophers Fall in Big Ten Opener

12/4/2022 6:41:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Jamison Battle led Minnesota with a season-high 21 points, Ta'Lon Cooper had 15 points and eight assists, and Joshua Ola-Joseph had 10 points, but No. 5/5 Purdue defeated the Gophers 89-70 in the Big Ten-opener for each team at Mackey Arena.

The Gophers trailed 27-20 with 5:39 remaining in the first half, but a 15-0 run by Purdue over a four-minute span put the Boilers up 42-20. Minnesota scored the final seven points of the half to go to the locker room down 42-27. The Gophers got within 11 points early in the second half, but Purdue had five players in double figures, led by national player of the year candidate Zach Edey's career-high totals of 31 points and 22 rebounds.

Battle made 8-of-17 field goals, including 5-of-10 from behind the three-point arc for his 12th 20-points game with the Gophers. Battle has reached double-figures in three of four games this season. Cooper was 6-of-9 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from three-point range, while dishing out eight assists and grabbing five rebounds. Ola-Joseph made his first collegiate start and finished with 10 points and three boards in 18 minutes. Braeden Carrington added nine points and six rebounds in 29 minutes for the Gophers.

Minnesota opens the Big Ten home season on Thursday when Michigan comes to town. Game time is at 8 p.m. at Williams Arena.
