Our Sunday storm brought 1-3” of snow to the mountains and the Treasure Valley. While it was not the biggest of storms, the temperatures were cold enough that the snow managed to stick to the roads and sidewalks. That goes to show that our ground is frozen and subsequent storms will likely make for slippery road conditions.
The good thing is that our snowpack levels have been doing quite well so far this season. The above graphic shows we have an average of about 150-170% of normal snow in our snow basins. While this is great news, we still have a lot of winter in front of us. All it will take is one big ridge of high pressure that settles in for a few weeks and it could shut down the snow making for Idaho and these numbers would drop quickly. Fortunately, I don’t see that happening for the near future. The Pattern wants to stay active for the next 10 days and additional storms are on the horizon.
But, for right now, we’ll go dry for a few days and with cold air trapped in the valley and with the moisture on the ground, there is a very good chance of seeing morning low clouds and fog impacting the Treasure Valley between now through at least the middle of the week. Computer models do show another storm approaching western Idaho by Thursday. With the cold air in place, this will likely bring periods of snow in the region through Saturday. The mountains could see snow starting Thursday and have it continue through next Sunday. Stay tuned.
