Pilot critically injured in gyroplane crash in Massachusetts
Federal investigators are working to determine the cause of a gyroplane crash that critically injured the pilot of the aircraft, according to police in the Massachusetts town.The Federal Aviation Administration said the gyroplane crashed while taking off at about 11:35 a.m. Sunday, and that the pilot was the only person on board the aircraft.Beverly police said they were informed of the crash shortly after 11:40 a.m., and that firefighters and emergency medical services personnel removed the pilot from the wreckage.Witnesses told sister-station WCVB that when the gyroplane took off from Runway 3-4, the aircraft suddenly turned upside down and crashed.The pilot was transported to Beverly Hospital with critical injuries, police said. Sources told Wayman that the pilot is from Manchester, Massachusetts.The crash is being investigated by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board. Beverly Regional Airport was closed for several hours following the crash but has since resumed operations.On Friday, an 83-year-old man was killed and a 70-year-old woman was seriously injured when a small plane crashed near the end of the runway at the Falmouth Airpark, a small airport on Cape Cod.
