“I’m gonna regret the s—t outta this,” John said in Sunday’s Yellowstone. And since “this” was taking advantage of Kayce, Monica and Tate’s presence at the big house by making Beth and the living-room contingent join them — and Summer — for supper in the dining room, you bet your ass the Dutton patriarch regretted it. How ugly did things get? Read on…
‘YESTERDAY IS WHAT EATS ME’ | As “Watch ’Em Ride Away” began, John put off letting Beth berate him for commuting Summer’s sentence and having her serve out her house arrest at their house just long enough to let Clara talk him out of cancelling all of his meetings so that he could gallop off to brand cattle with the bunkhouse boys. If he wanted to invite the press, anyway, to show them what the Yellowstone is really all about, his assistant suggested that he could turn the spring gathering into a MEPP (manufactured event for political purposes) and blow through a week’s worth of sit-downs in a day. “Load me up,” John said, delighted. That Clara, she’s good!
Over at Kayce and Monica’s, only when she found her husband in tears did she realize that she’d never asked how he was feeling in the wake of their loss. He was worried — about everything — and didn’t have a clue about the direction in which he should point. Monica did, though. She didn’t want him to quit his job; that wasn’t to blame for baby John’s death. Nor was a buffalo. God needed him, she said. For what? Well, “that’ll be the first question I ask when I meet Him.” Till then, they and Tate needed a break, so she wanted them to accept John’s invitation to the spring gathering. Back at the ranch, Beth shocked Rip by wanting to ride out with the cowboys, too.
‘IF YOU THOUGHT LAST NIGHT WAS UNPROFESSIONAL… ’ | At Jamie’s office, he busted Sarah for having hooked up with him just so that he’d have to recuse himself from representing the state against Market Equities. The thing is, he added, the state hires outside counsel. So if that was why she’d [bleeped] him, she’d done it — and him — for nothing. In response, she began unbuttoning her dress. That evening, since Kayce and his family were at the ranch, John made the mistake of insisting that Beth, Rip and Carter join them and Summer at the table. It did not go well. In fact, it went so poorly that Beth suggested that she and Summer take a walk.
Outside, the nemeses beat the living daylights out of one another. We’re talking brutally, too — to the point that Beth head-butted Summer, and Summer kicked Beth in the p—sy. Finally, Rip broke up the fight, shamed the women and invited them to stop rolling around and finish up with some dignity — by standing and taking turns socking one another. Summer took a lot — a lot a lot! — but finally cried uncle, after which… Well, holy hell. It looked like Beth was willing to extend an olive branch; she even made a crack, then walked it back since “we’re not doing that anymore.” Seeing the two of them post-brawl, John couldn’t help but admit to Rip that he envied Beth’s freedom.
‘IF IT DOESN’T MAKE YOU CRY TO WATCH YOUR FAMILY RIDE AWAY, YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN’T HAVE ONE’ | Before Beth rode off with her father, husband, brother, nephew and a whole bunch of ranch hands, she suggested — nicely — that Summer use the two days that everyone would be gone to take a walk around the ranch. “Tell me if there is a forest in America in better shape or more loved, then tell me we’re the enemy.” Saying goodbye to Kayce, Monica urged him to look out for “our boy — he’s the only one we got.” For the moment, anyway. “We’re gonna fix that,” Kayce told his wife. With that, off he rode, taking half the cast with him.
So, your thoughts on the episode? That Beth/Summer brawl — one of TV’s all-time best, no? And could Sarah be any more seductively sneaky? Hit the comments with your observations, questions, etc.
Best brawl ever!!!! On any show!! Is Jamie that stupid or just taking advantage of what Sarah’s offering? I’d like to see Summer & Beth join forces for real…that would be impressive!
Maybe it’s me but this episode was just okay, & I thought the fight between Beth & Summer was stupid. I mean, do real people actually act that way ? But it’s a show, so I figure they had to do something to make it interesting. A simple loud argument with one of them, most likely Summer, leaving the table would have been pretty boring. It was just confusing, tho, for Rip to say they both looked ridiculous fighting it out on the grass, but then he has them standing up & trading punches. That wasn’t ridiculous, I guess.
I agree with you… the brawl was stupid and excessive… I’m sure Summer’s meal plans were not to her liking in prison… over the top dialog, the ensuing brawl is turning me off the series… More Rainwater and Mo Plenty! At least Monica laughed!
Monica is going to try and hurt herself. If you think about it she seemed oddly at peace, forgiving, encouraging of dangerous outings and happy/laughing, she’s at peace because she has a plan to be with her baby. And the ambulance helicopter, it’s for her….something to ponder.
That was my thought also
Great episode and hopefully, finally Beth and Summer got everything out of their system. I’m glad that Beth, Clara and well as the 2 young boys all road out together. Hopefully Monica can help Summer understand the love of the land, in a way that Beth nor John can.
.
I will say that if someone was in my house eating food prepared for them and carried on the way Summer did, I wouldn’t have hit her but I would have suggested she leave not only the table but the house. Sadly, because of John getting her house arrest, they can’t throw her out.
I agree, but if my adult child ever spoke to a guest in my house that way they would be out on the street. So I guess they both would be told to leave.
Summer is the worst “guest” ever. What she said to the cook was disgusting and unforgiveable. And since Beth was the only one to call her out, or the only one who had the guts, kudos. We all know how Beth feels about her home and her Dad, how can you be surprised? John told Rip he envies Beth. That says something.
Boring season so far. Everyone constantly angry at everyone else and treating everyone like crap, with no consequences.
Youve pretty much summed up this show perfectly. Everybody is always angry and nasty to each other. Yet its strangely addictive
Yes, very boring indeed! Sarah’s big entrance in episode two has simply fizzled and is now humorous and contrived… Maybe the writers should borrow some dialog/ideas from some old Dallas episodes… something needs to change for me to keep watching. I think of the superb series “Justified” and how they managed to keep it exciting through six seasons.
Love, love, love Justified and can’t wait for the new mini-series which I understand is already completed.
It feels like too many of these episodes have been fillers. What is the point of Sarah Atwood and Caroline letting her loose to take them down if all she is doing is screwing Jamie? They are appointing outside counsel so he doesn’t need to recuse himself. There was a time when the writers could walk and chew gum and show off what is the core of the show – protecting the land/understanding why they fight to protect it and fight the bad guys at the same time. What exactly is Market Equities claim to fight what John has done – canceling the contracts and putting the land into conservatism? Who is actually doing the fighting for Market Equities now that Caroline is back in NY?
Market Equities is between a rock and a hard place, but that is why Caroline sicced Sarah on Jamie – “Let Sarah do what Sarah does.” Something will happen there. Beth needs to figure out who Sarah is and take care of it, since Jamie is only thinking with his you know what.
This show is starting to remind me of SOA. Great first seasons and then a consistent fall in quality with a need to keep out doing its self, with no actual consequences. Victims of their own successes.
Another great episode. The brawl between Summer & Beth was the highlight of the episode.
I actually think that the show is genius. It is a reflection of exactly what the world is like today people not being able to get along. You know I am not an art guy but I really had one artwork that I wanted to see and that was a real da Vinci. I was able see it and I am so glad I was. What Dutton said about politics was left out if your recap. It was spot on. We need to find some common ground in this country or we stand losing it.
I agree Matt. It’s a reflection of the anger today. I see it everywhere. Also loved the scene between Rip and Beth in the outfitting room. He truly understands her.
What was Rip’s line to Beth? “You need to pack up the crazy” or something like that. That line should go on some tee shirts.
The early morning preparations with the horses and cowboys were excellent! The sounds of the leather slapping as they saddled up, horses hooves as unloading from trailers, and the groans of the older guys as they mounted up. Very authentic!
It crossed my mind when they were lined up and John rode to the front, that it was like they were preparing for war.
John invited some neighboring ranchers to help. I can’t help thinking that something will happen to the older rancher in the next episode. Having a life-flight helicopter hovering can’t be good news. Or possibly, one of the boys. Hopefully Taylor would not do that to us.
While the drama and intrigue keep things exciting. Yellowstone is never better than when it focuses on the majesty of the land, and gives us a genuine glimpse into the oft romanticized cowboy way of life. There was something beautiful in watching their preparations in the quiet pre-dawn hours.
Agree. After all the fireworks between Beth and Summer I found the final six minutes or so the most enjoyable: the trailers arriving with additional men and horses, everyone saddling and mounting up, the political assistant saying she was from Miles City, which is why she could ride with the boys, Beth in pain as she sits in the saddle and Monica’s final observation on family as they ride off. Superb…which is what makes “Yellowstone” the great show that it is.
Yes yes yes. This is why we watch. Powerful.
Im getting a real feeling of impending doom for the next episode. Im guessing not everyone is coming back from this excursion.
And Imho, john Dutton will go doen as the worst governor in Montana history. What has he really done for anyone but his own family?
I am guessing that old guy may not make it, but he will die with his boots on, happy….And I love the way Lloyd was so excited about roughing it and sleeping on the ground! As for Dutton as Governor, first of all he just started. Second, as the Yellowstone Ranch goes, so goes all the Montana ranches. He is fighting for the rights to his own property. He is fighting to keep developers away. Some people are for it, some against. But he was elected so he gets to do what he wants for 4 years.
Best episode so far about time Kayce and Tate get back to the Ranch. Wish Summer would knocked all of Beth teeth out.
I haven’t noticed a progression of the storyline in the past few episodes. I have noticed Taylor Sheridan taking his opportunity to draw attention to some of the woes of our country. And I’m here for it. Love this show. I fear either Jamie or Beth will be gone by the end of the season at the hands of the other.
I think Market Equities will frame Beth for killing Jamie. Given the way she acts towards him especially nearly causing Jamie to lose control of the car when he was driving her to ranch. It is as if she is giving them the rope to hang her with.
Jamie almost ran her over, she stepped out of the way at the last second. Beth has more to gain by keeping him alive; Jamie would have more to gain by killing Beth. But somehow I don’t think this is where it’s going. I want Beth to figure out who Sarah is.
Glorified Recapped “Dallas”. Beth is psychotic, John is about as poor of an excuse for a father as I am. Episodic, formulaic.
All of Taylor Sheridan’s characters have great lines! And the cast definitely are skilled in bringing it all to the screen.
Great show! They all deserve awards!
Yellowstone really showcases the land, the lifestyle, & the hardships of a cowboy’s life, the greed of developers, & the struggles of Native Americans. A masterpiece.
the best part of last night?? monica laughing at the dinner table at the awkwardness of it all…and casey trying to hold his laughter in as well…utterly ridiculous. felt monica needed that. otherwise, same old same old beth… ain’t nothing gunna change that girl ever.
Another great episode. This season is shaping up to be the best yet.
Summer’s character has added a whole different vibe to the show. Piper Perabo is a terrific actress.
Can ‘t wait for next Sunday night.
Let me know when a story actually takes hold this season. Kayce and Monica need one. Jamie needs one. Beth needs a lobotomy. John needs a good kick in the dumper.
There have been a few great moments in this season, but not enough to fill one episode, let alone 5. I love Yellowstone, but this season has been very slow and disjointed. They are getting closer to jumping the shark.
I agree! That “girl fight” was ridiculous, and so was John’s sermon about the virtue of fighting. There’s some truth to his complaint about complainers and blamers but also some BS and hypocrisy. Reducing Rip’s character this season, and reducing the amount and quality of music and landscape scenes has reduced my enjoyment of the show.
Does anyone know who the ranch hands are in the beginning of the episode? The scene is from the past when they are young. I know the one ranch hand is a young version of Roy and the young boy is Rip. Who is the ranch hand young flirting with young Beth?
I think Lloyd and Rip are the only long term hands on the ranch. My guess is Beth sleep with that other cowboy After her sterilization based on all the makeup she’s wearing is this flashback (but the actress looks just as young as before). Old reviews point out that White women are plot foils for Taylor Sheridan, or sympathetic victims in the case of indigenous women.
This show is so well-written.
Where is this season going?
John is Governor-they are missing story lines that could be compelling. His character does not strike me as someone who would be satisfied as do nothing.
The storylines are getting to be so depressing.
What happened to their successful horse trade and John’s vision to branded similar to King Ranch.
The Market Equities story just feels to be stretching out until it does not make sense any longer-or it will stretch credibility.
Hoping they can turn the corner and let someone smile.
Have to say I am getting tired of Beth’s over the top anger. My favorite character is Rip and noticed when John said he admired Beth for her not holding back Rip didn’t say a word. He knows she’s not well and tortured. Good scene with John and Rip
