Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street's producer Iain MacLeod has confirmed plans for light-hearted Christmas storylines this year.

The ITV soap's festive special will see Fiz Stape and Tyrone Dobbs take centre stage with a romantic wedding storyline.

Upcoming scenes will see Tyrone pop the question to Fiz. When Fiz later complains about the stress of wedding planning, Tyrone decides to make all of the preparations in secret and surprise her with the ceremony on Christmas Day.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media, MacLeod acknowledged that Corrie has reverted to heartwarming Christmas storylines after experimenting with darker festive episodes in 2019.

He commented: "The episodes are fun, warm and family-orientated. Corrie has historically always done that.

"A few years ago, we went a little bit Die Hard with Gary, Shona and the funfair. I absolutely loved that. It allowed us to do a thriller-ish conceptual trailer for it, so it was all very exciting.

"But we're right in our wheelhouse now with this Christmas. It's got loads of comedy, family fun and warmth. I cried twice in the viewing – and I'm not given to tears! It's really moving and lovely. It's not sad, but in a 'warm your cockles' way."

MacLeod continued: "I really think fans are going to love it. The Fiz and Tyrone strand is the centrepiece and really good fun. It's just the right amount of silly with brilliant writing, and the performers are exemplary, as they are across the show generally.

"Alan and Jennie are marvellous and the kids are great. It feels totally Christmassy and it's totally Corrie – a warm, good-spirited end to the year for us."

Daniel Osbourne has previously been named as another character who'll feature prominently in the Christmas episodes, as he plans to pop the question to his girlfriend Daisy Midgeley.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
