Georgia State student killed in 'targeted' shooting near campus, police say

A Georgia State University student was shot and killed in a shooting close to campus in what police are considering a "targeted" act of violence.

Around 4:18 p.m., officers were dispatched to the RaceTrac gas station on the 100 block of Piedmont Avenue in northeast Georgia after reports of shots fired.

At the scene, police discovered a man with gunshot wounds. Medics rushed the victim to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

Monday, GSU President M. Brian Blake confirmed in a letter to the university that the victim was a student.

"As a leader, I am heartbroken to lose a member of our community and I hope you will keep the surviving family in your thoughts," Blake said. "We are deeply saddened by this act of violence and will continue to keep you updated on the case and Georgia State's ongoing safety efforts."

School officials say police believe that the shooting was a "targeted incident."

The university has placed additional police officers in the housing area and are working with the Atlanta Police Department to identify and apprehend the people involved in the shooting.

The identity of the victim and any potential suspects have not been released.
