UPDATE: Monroe County Children’s Detention Center staffer accused of hitting child

UPDATE: Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested an employee at the county’s Children’s Detention Center after people reported that he allowed two children in the bathroom so they could engage in “slap boxing” and hit a child on November 23.

Deputies say that camera footage shows John A. Kanu, 23 of Greece, hitting a child in the face after the child exited the bathroom. Kanu was charged with endangering the welfare of a child. He was fired from his job according to the county and was released on an appearance ticket for Rush Town Court.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – An employee at the Monroe County Children’s Detention Center has been arrested and fired.

A spokesperson for Monroe County says county staff were made aware of a “violation of rules” at the center, which is on Rush Scottsville Road, on Nov. 23.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office was brought in to investigate, according to the county, and the worker was arrested and fired.

The county did not disclose the violation, what the employee’s position was, or how long they worked there.

The New York State Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs has been brought in.

Meanwhile, the county says an internal investigation continues.
