One of the best hikers in the world is from New Hampshire and got back from a 4,800-mile hike a couple weeks ago.
If you look at Patrick French’s Facebook bio, it says that he's a "lazy good-for-nothing couch potato." But that's not quite accurate as he is a world-class hiker.
“I started the Appalachian Trail, then fell in love with it and never looked back,” French said.
Seven years later, the Concord, New Hampshire, native has turned his passion into a career.
What started off in 2015 with the 2,100-mile-long Appalachian Trail led to French finishing the 4,800-mile-long North Country National Scenic Trail in November of this year, hiking from North Dakota to Vermont.
“I walked from North Dakota to Lowell, Michigan, got my wallet stolen, so I had to fly back to New Hampshire, get a new ID, my dad dropped me off in Vermont and I hiked my way back,” French said.
At 40 years old, French has had frostbite three times, completed the hiking Triple Crown and has completed 10 out of 11 National Scenic Trails.
“I’ll be the third person to have thru-hiked all 11 National Scenic Trails when I finish the New England Trail,” French said.
His plan to hike the New England National Scenic Trail could be as soon as this winter.
“I want to finish it soon,” French said. “It's only 215 miles, so it wouldn't take very long.”
The New Hampshire native would make a historic accomplishment.
“New Hampshire really inspires me,” French said. “It's probably the best place on the Appalachian Trail if you're looking for views and everything.”
French said that the North Country National Scenic Trail was more mentally challenging than it was physically because he was walking through mostly neighborhoods and not secluded by nature.
