Casualty spoilers follow.
Casualty will be airing a special, improvised episode later this month – which breaks away from the traditional house style.
The scenes, which were entirely unscripted, explore the pressures and difficulties the paramedic team – Jan, Sah, Teddy and Iain – face every single day as frontline health care workers.
Here's a full collection of the seven biggest moments to watch out for:
1. Jan's struggles continue
Jan returns from a short break reinvigorated but her good mood is tested when she’s called to a regular, Robbie, who’s drunk and reluctant to go to the ED.
Finally convincing Robbie to get into the ambulance, Jan and Teddy rush to their next shout: a woman suffering an anaphylactic shock caused by a nut allergy.
2. Teddy battles with a crisis of confidence
Teddy finds himself under extreme pressure when his female patient stops breathing in the back of the speeding ambulance.
Despite some hesitation, Teddy manages to put his fears aside to do a surgical airway. He saves the patient’s life, but is left questioning himself afterwards.
At the hospital, Teddy continues to be abused by the woman's panic-stricken husband, but is reminded by Jan that he took the lead on an extremely tough case, and handled it well.
3. Sah and Jan grow increasingly frustrated
Jan and Sah find themselves unable to respond to urgent calls as they’re stuck in the ambulance queue outside ED.
Sah is further frustrated to pull up to a shout only to be redirected to a greater emergency, where the same thing happens again.
Things come to a head when Jan and Sah are called out to a possible stroke, only to find the woman unharmed and simply hoping the paramedics will do a food shop for her.
Furious that they rejected a cardiac arrest for this, Sah and Jan rush there instead, but arrive too late. Despite their best efforts, the man dies and Jan is forced to absorb his wife’s grief.
4. Jan delivers some bad news
On Day three, Jan receives stats stating that the Holby Paramedics are performing badly and are down there with the worst in the country.
She encourages the team to move more quickly and finds herself meeting Robbie again, who has now cut his hand trying to gain access to the home he used to share with his wife.
Jan is later alarmed to discover that Robbie’s wife actually died two days ago.
5. Iain supports Teddy
Having suffered a crisis of confidence with his earlier case, Teddy later approaches a dangerous situation alone, against Iain’s advice.
As things escalate, Teddy begins to find his confidence with Iain's support.
He calmly manages to talk down an anxious and armed Scott, who suffers from a mental health condition.
6. Jan has a public outburst
Jan begins to lose her cool later in the week, when a female patient complains about being stuck in the ambulance queue with a minor leg injury.
At the end of her tether, Jan delivers a passionate speech about lack of NHS resources, unaware the unmoved patient has a large online following and is filming her.
7. Jan is involved in a shock accident
At the end of the week, Jan is called to a drunk Robbie again, who has, this time, collapsed and is coughing up blood.
Determined to get him to the ED quickly, Jan reverses down a road but hits a pedestrian.
Horrified, Jan struggles to focus as Sah takes control of both patients, and is then forced to watch as the staff battle to save them in the ED.
Dylan later informs Jan that the pedestrian is stabilised, but she takes no comfort from this as Robbie has died.
Shocked, devastated and exhausted, Jan returns home where her mask finally slips as she breaks down on Ffion.
Casualty airs on Saturday nights on BBC One, and streams on BBC iPlayer.
