Town of Huntington officials say a fire destroyed multiple garbage trucks at a town maintenance yard on Saturday night.
The fire at the Town of Huntington's maintenance facility on Boxer Court charred six garbage trucks and could be seen for miles. The sound of the vehicles' large tires exploding echoed through the neighborhood. Despite the extensive damages, officials say no one was hurt.
"They put it out fairly quickly but the devastation to the fleet was significant," says Huntington Environmental Waste Management Director John Clark.
Six of the town's 15 trucks were destroyed, which is a third of its fleet.
Officials say the trucks were parked where they usually are. The town says they've been told by the fire marshal's office that the fire does not seem suspicious. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The town is asking residents to hold back on putting excessive amounts of garbage and yard waste out for pick up. They add that pickups should continue without issue on Monday.
"There will be no cancelations of pickups. If we have to schedule additional crews to work on Saturdays, we will. I think most of the service will be uninterrupted," Clark says.
Two trucks were salvaged from the fire and were being repaired on Sunday. The town says, however, it will need to replace the destroyed trucks, some of which were not even two years old.
Officials say the problem is special vehicles like garbage trucks take about a year to be delivered and are not cheap.
"They are approximately $250,000 per vehicle…and the prices keep rising on a continual basis," Clark says.
Officials say they're now actively looking on the secondary market to see if any used trucks may be available.
Other neighboring towns will help as well. The Town of Oyster Bay has loaned three of its trucks to Huntington temporarily.
