Here's who won this year's Massachusetts high school football Super Bowls
The high school football season has come to an end in Massachusetts, with eight teams taking home a state championship trophy from the home of the New England Patriots.Gillette Stadium played host to all eight Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association football state championship games, known in the state as Super Bowls, across two days.This is the 15th year Gillette Stadium has hosted state championship games and the fifth time that all eight title games will be played at the Foxborough venue.This year marks the 50th anniversary of the first Massachusetts high school Super Bowls. In 1972, two games were played at Boston University and two others were played at Springfield College.A tripleheader of games was played Friday, the day after the Patriots hosted the Buffalo Bills for "Thursday Night Football." The remaining five Super Bowls were played on Saturday.Here is a recap from each of the state championship games in chronological order.Division 7The West Boylston Lions captured their third state championship, and first since 2012, with a 29-6 win over the St. Bernard's Bernardians on Friday.Junior running back Jamie McNamara rushed for 136 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown run, that sealed West Boylston's victory. McNamara also scored on a two-point conversion and kicked an extra point.The Lions also set a record when junior quarterback Luke Foley and fellow junior Connor Muldoon connected on a 91-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring. That TD pass is now the longest in Super Bowl history.Senior fullback Antonio Mancini rushed for 72 yards and scored St. Bernard's lone touchdown of the game. Fellow senior Damien Jones finished with 71 rushing yards for the Bernardians.Division 5The North Reading Hornets won their first state championship with a 44-28 victory over the Shawsheen Valley Tech Rams on Friday.Senior quarterback Alex Carucci and junior running back Will Batten starred for the Hornets. Carucci threw for two touchdown passes and ran for two more scores, while Batten finished with three total touchdowns — two rushing and one receiving.Shawsheen senior Mavrick Bourdeau finished with 17 catches, which tied a single-game Super Bowl record, for 240 receiving yards and a touchdown.
