Atlantic City teen allegedly ditched gun running from police

  • News

A 16-year-old boy was arrested after he allegedly threw a gun as he fled police Saturday.

The teen had been identified as the suspect in a strong-arm robbery earlier in the day and was seen in possession of a handgun, Sgt. Paul Aristizabal said.

Sgt. Christopher LoDico saw the teen in a group of males around 5:30 p.m. in the 1600 block of Atlantic Avenue, according to the report.

Bell and Officer Ivan Cruz tried to stop the juvenile, who started to walk away and refused orders to top, Aristizabal said.

As they chased the teen, Bell saw him discard what turned out to be a loaded handgun, according to the charges.

The teen continued west, and was arrested at the corner of Indiana and Atlantic avenues, after a brief struggle, Aristizabal said.

A search found him in possession of six grams of suspected crack cocaine, according to the charges. The handgun was also fitted with a high-capacity magazine.

As the juvenile was being taken into custody, a crowd formed, trying to obstruct the investigation, Aristizabal said.

Danny Roberts Jr., 44, of Atlantic City, refused officers’ orders to back away from the scene. He was charged with obstruction and released on a summons.

The teen was charged with possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, possession of a high-capacity magazine, possession of a weapon while committing a drug offense, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession with the intent to distribute, possession with intent to distribute within 500 feet of a public park, and two counts of resisting arrest.

He was taken to Harborfields Juvenile Detention Center.

There were not yet any charges in the earlier robbery.
