HONOLULU (KHON2) — Hawaii County police conducted a police investigation near Old Saddle Road after an unexploded ordnance was found off the roadway on Sunday, Dec. 4.
Due to the investigation, the Mauna Loa viewing area was temporarily closed, according to officials.
Hawaii Island police said the closure stretched along the Old Saddle Road lava viewing area between the 28.5 mile marker to the 34 mile marker.
Drivers were encouraged to avoid the area during the investigation.
A military spokesperson confirmed the closure was related to an unexploded ordnance.
By 4 p.m., the view area was reopened after the ordnance was safely destroyed, said the Hawaii Emergency Management.
