Hawaii Island police said the closure stretched along the Old Saddle Road lava viewing area between the 28.5 mile marker to the 34 mile marker.

Drivers were encouraged to avoid the area during the investigation.

A military spokesperson confirmed the closure was related to an unexploded ordnance.

By 4 p.m., the view area was reopened after the ordnance was safely destroyed, said the Hawaii Emergency Management.

HI-EMA reminds visitors that leaving the road is trespassing and could result in sprained ankles to old grenades as the viewing area runs through parts of a military training area.
