Stimulus update: Maryland school employees to receive $1,000 bonus next week

.

Maryland school employees can expect an appreciation bonus of $1,000 in December.

Employees of Anne Arundel County Public Schools will receive prorated bonuses based on a worker’s full-time equivalency, according to Superintendent Mark Bedell, who announced the bonuses on Wednesday.

“No school system can be great without great people,” Bedell wrote in a letter to staff. “As I have said before, the work you are doing in the face of some stiff challenges is incredible. No matter your role in our school system, our students benefit every day from your dedication and passion. Please don’t ever forget that.”

The money will come from money saved from vacancies across the school system, Bedell said, and the district did not need to ask for extra money to cover the bonuses.

Bonuses will go to all permanent employees except those on a leave of absence by Dec. 16. Bedell will not be accepting the bonus, he said. Healthcare premiums will not be deducted from workers’ pay on Dec. 26 due to the balance of the school district’s healthcare fund.

“I fully realize that the bonus is a small gesture of appreciation,” Bedell said in his letter. “However, it is critically important to me and to the Board of Education that we continue to find ways to simply say ‘Thank You.’”
