Herschel Walker ‘one of the worst’ candidates in history: GOP Georgia lieutenant governor

The lieutenant governor of Georgia believes Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker is one of the worst candidates the GOP has ever chosen.

Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan (R) said in an interview with CBS News congressional correspondent Nikole Killion that he does not think Walker is the right challenger for Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA). The two are facing off in a runoff election on Tuesday.

Duncan said he is a conservative but does not think the party picked the right people to face off against Democratic incumbents or candidates in the 2022 midterm elections.

“I’m a conservative because I think it’s the best way to govern,” Duncan said. “I’ve been a Republican a lot longer than a lot of folks. I think I’ve got kids probably that could articulate the conservative platform better than some of the candidates that Donald Trump and his group supported all across the country.”

Many marquee candidates endorsed by former President Donald Trump suffered defeat at the hands of their Democratic opponents, including Kari Lake for Arizona governor, Tudor Dixon for Michigan governor, and Don Bolduc for New Hampshire senator, among others.

“This wasn’t the right brand for Republicanism, and I think Herschel Walker will probably go down as one of the worst Republican candidates in our party’s history,” Duncan said.

Duncan did not seek reelection this year, partly due to his vocal opposition to Trump. He, along with recently reelected Gov. Brian Kemp (R) and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R), pushed back against the former president when he sought to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election results.

A jury in Georgia’s Fulton County is hearing testimony on the president’s actions in 2020, and county investigators led by District Attorney Fani Willis have subpoenaed several high-profile Republicans to testify, including Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Mark Meadows, former White House chief of staff.

The Peach State is seeing record-breaking voter turnout among Georgians who voted early last week in the Dec. 6 runoff election. The turnout appears to include slightly more likely Warnock voters than those who voted early in the general election.

If Warnock wins, he will increase the Democrats’ Senate majority to 51-49.
