The Pella boys swimmers with Newton competed at the Cardinal invitational Saturday, placing 3rd in a competitive field.

Coach Sarah Patterson says the most exciting event of the season was the last one–the 400 freestyle relay where they battled with Indianola back and forth until freshman Finn Martin dove in for the last leg and posted a blistering 55.00 for the final split. Eli Eekhoff led off with a personal best split of 57.54, Clay Lamb was a 1:02.55, and MacK Copeland swam a personal best split of 1:03.24.

Eekhoff also placed 2nd in the 50 freestyle.

“His training has been spot-on, and he is super fun to watch. I feel like we are just scratching the surface with all of our guys,” Patterson says.

Freshman Mason Gaulke placed 4th in the IM and 8th in the 100 freestyle with a converted time of under 1:00.

MacK Copeland placed 5th in the 400 freestyle, and Patterson says his time of 5:22.50 “crushed” where he started last year.
