CHANCE OF RAIN. DETAILS STRAIGHT AHEAD. EMILY: AN INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT STORY OUT OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI. A MOTHER IS CHARGED WITH THE DEATH OF A CHILD AND NEGLECT OF ANOTHER. THE JACKSON COUNTY PROSECUTOR’S OFFICE SAYS 43-YEAR-OLD ADAIR FISH CALLED POLICE TO HER HOME ON ST. JOHN AVENUE NOVEMBER 3RD. OFFICERS FOUND ONE OF THE CHILDREN, A 5-YEAR-OLD DEAD AT THE HOME. THE OTHER WAS UNRESPONSIVE. POLICE SAY FISH TOLD THEM THE 5-YEAR-OLD HAD DIED SEVERAL DAYS PRIOR. DOCTORS SAY THE CHILD DIED FROM MALNUTRITION AND DEHYDRATION. THE CHILD PROTECTION CENTER IN KANSAS CITY WORKS ON TOUGH CASES LIKE THIS ONE. KMBC 9’S PEYTON HEADLEE IS IN THE STUDIO AFTER TALKING TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE ADVOCACY GROUP TODAY. A REALLY DIFFICULT SITUATION. PEYTON: THE PRESIDENT COULDN’T SPEAK TO THE SPECIFICS OF THE CASE, BUT SHE DID SAY ITS HARD ANYTIME YOU HEAR ABOUT CHILDREN BEING TREATED LIKE THIS. SHE SAID ITS IMPORTANT FOR EVERYONE TO REACH OUT AND OFFER A HAND TO PEOPLE WHO MIGHT NEED HELP. JUST OUTSIDE OF THE COMPLEX ON ST. JOHN AVENUE, SITS A MEMORIAL WITH FLOWERS, CANDLES AND A BABY DOLL. IT’S WHERE PROSECUTORS SAY A FIVE-YEAR-OLD DIED FROM NEGLECT AND ABUSE. >> ITS’ REALLY HARD. ANY TIME YOU SEE CHILDREN THAT ARE BEING HURT, THAT AREN’T BEING CARED FOR, THAT AREN’T BEING TAKEN CARE OF, IT CAN REALLY TAKE A TOLL. PEYTON: LISA MIZELL IS THE PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE CHILD PROTECTION CENTER. THE GROUP ADVOCATES FOR CHILDREN WHO HAVE BEEN ABUSED. >> I REALLY BELIEVE THAT IF WE DON’T HAVE HEALTHY CHILDREN, WE DON’T HAVE A HEALTHY SOCIETY. PEYTON: SHE SAID CASES LIKE THAT OF ADAIR FISH AREN’T COMMON. >> MOST PEOPLE DON’T DO THAT DELIBERATELY, THAT’S VERY RARE. IT’S USUALLY BECAUSE EITHER THAT’S HOW THEY WERE RAISED, THEY DON’T KNOW ANY BETTER, OR THERE’S UNDERLYING MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES. PEYTON: COURT DOCUMENTS SAY THE APARTMENT WAS COVERED WITH TRASH, REACHING FIVE FEET HIGH OFF THE FLOOR IN SOME PLACES. THAT’S WHERE OFFICERS FOUND THE BODY OF THE FIVE-YEAR-OLD. COURT DOCUMENTS ALSO SAY THE OTHER CHILD REMAINS IN THE HOSPITAL. DOCTORS SAY THE CHILD SUFFERED FROM NEGLECT, PSYCHOLOGICAL MISTREATMENT AND PHYSICAL ABUSE. MEDICAL RECORDS SHOW IN THREE YEARS, THE CHILD GAINED ONLY FOUR POUNDS. MIZELL SAYS HEARING ABOUT CASES LIKE THIS CAN BE HARD, BUT SHE CONTINUES HER PASSION TO HELP. >> WE BRING KIDS IN HERE WHO HAVE BEEN HURT, FAMILIES WHO ARE DEALING WITH OVERWHELMING STRESS, AND HOPEFULLY WE’RE ABLE TO FIND AND GIVE THEM THE TOOLS THEY NEED TO MOVE FORWARD IN A POSITIVE AND HEALTHY WAY. PEYTON: FISH LOST CUSTODY OF HER CHILDREN, BUT GOT THEM BACK IN NOVEMBER OF 2019. MIZELL SAYS REGAINING CUSTODY IS A LONG AND DIFFICULT PROCESS, AND THAT SHE PROBABLY HAD TO DO A LOT OF WORK TO PROVE TO THE COURT SHE WAS READY TO HAVE HE
