Marine Corps veteran celebrates 103rd birthday in Oviedo
One of the longest-living people in Oviedo reached a milestone Sunday.
John Chaney celebrated his 103rd birthday.
The Marine Corps veteran still rides his bike almost every day.
On Saturday, the community honored him with a drive-by parade where cars lined up to celebrate his special day.
Afterward, they gathered around to sing "Happy Birthday."
Chaney even received a card with 103 signatures, birthday wishes and words of encouragement.
Oviedo Mayor Megan Sladek helped organize this.
"There were probably as many “entries” in this parade as there will be at the one tonight [Saturday] at Oviedo on the Park," Sladek said. "Super heartwarming, especially when we were all gathered around him after the parade ended. Two more WWII veterans came up to stand with him, then all the Marines in the crowd gathered around and all his kids."
Five of his children came to town to celebrate Chaney's birthday.
From all of us at WESH 2, Happy Birthday Mr. Chaney. Thank you for your service!
