The 2022 Orange Bowl isn't a College Football Playoff semifinal like it was last year, but it remains a coveted game in the New Year's Six bowl schedule.

Known best for the actual bowl of oranges that tops the winner's trophy, the Orange Bowl has been played for 89 years, including more than two decades at the venue now known as Hard Rock Stadium. Prior to 1996, it was played full time at the Miami Orange Bowl, which was actually renamed because of the game.

The ACC is guaranteed a spot in the Orange Bowl, while the remaining slot will be filled by either an SEC or Big Ten team. The SEC has won each of the last four Orange Bowls, so the ACC will be looking to change its luck in this year's edition.

Who plays in the Orange Bowl 2022?

The Orange Bowl will feature a battle between ACC and SEC teams, as No. 6 Tennessee will do battle with No. 7 Clemson in the New Year's Six Bowl.

Tennessee was ranked No. 1 overall in the first College Football Playoff rankings after earning a 52-49 win over then-No. 3-ranked Alabama and beating 19th-ranked Kentucky 44-6. However, a loss to Georgia and a late-season blowout loss to South Carolina took them out of the running for the SEC Championship — and a CFP berth.

The Volunteers (10-2) will now look to prove that they were more deserving of playoff consideration even after losing star quarterback Hendon Hooker to a torn ACL. That injury, which occurred against the Gamecocks, added injury to the insult of being knocked out of the CFP race in that loss.

Meanwhile, Clemson automatically qualified for the Orange Bowl after winning the ACC championship game 39-10 over North Carolina. That marked Clemson's seventh conference title in the last eight years.

The Tigers, like the Vols, posted a record of 10-2 in 2022 and suffered a loss at the hands of South Carolina, 31-30. Clemson was also blown out by Notre Dame 35-14 in November; that loss, plus the team's inconsistent D.J. Uiagalelei-led offense, was largely what kept the Tigers from rising too far in the College Football Playoff rankings.
