Suspect arrested after 3 people shot in South Side shooting

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Youngstown police have arrested and identified a suspect after a shooting that left three people injured early Sunday morning on Youngstown’s South Side.

It happened around 2 a.m. at King’s Court, formerly the Coconut Grove on South Avenue.

According to a YPD press release, the owner of the bar and a YPD officer apprehended and arrested suspect Machai Cheatham, 21, while he was reportedly running from the bar still armed.

YPD also released the ages of the three victims in the shooting, three men ages 19, 29 and 30. Police say two of the victims are in serious condition and one is in stable condition.

Witnesses say a fight broke out inside the bar and then shots were fired. One person was seen lying on the ground with gunshot wounds.

Police say they are in the process of interviewing dozens of witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage.

A good Samaritan helped perform CPR on the victims before more police arrived, according to YPD.

“We want to thank a good Samaritan who had come by and rendered help to render first aid to one of the shot individuals whose inside the bar we are very grateful for that,” said YPD Captain Jason Simon.

Cheatham faces three counts of felonious assault. The investigation is ongoing.
