Showdown in the Lake: Lafayette Christian wins inaugural girls title, Madison Prep takes boys title

Lafayette Christian 78, Fairview 71

Lafayette Christian captured the inaugural Hamilton Christian Showdown in the Lake girls basketball tournament with a tipsy-turvy 78-71 win over Fairview.

The Knights (10-1) started the game with a 19-6 run, fueled by scoring whiz Jada Richard, who scored seven in the outburst. 

Fairview (13-4) stormed back in the second quarter, twice getting within four points. LCA ended the quarter with a 14-7 run to take a 41-30 halftime lead. 

Bella Smith shot the Panthers back into the game, scoring 12 points in the third quarter. Fairview scored 28 points in the quarter and twice tied the game.

The Panthers never went ahead, with LCA leading 59-58 going into the fourth. Richard scored eight of her 27 points in the final frame as the Knights held off a late Fairview charge. The Panthers were within one with 2:26 left, but LCA closed the game with six straight points, all by Richard.

Ella Reeves led Fairview with 27 points. Reesie Jinks scored 19 and Smith 13. Dacia Jones had 13 and Kaliyah Samuels scored 12 for LCA. 

Boys

Madison Prep 48, St. Thomas More 41

The Chargers repeated as tournament champs, pulling away from the Cougars in the final three minutes.

STM pulled within two on a pair of free throws by Anthony Angelle with three minutes left, but never scored again, turning the ball over on each of its last four possessions.

Madison Prep put the game away with a basket by Jayce Depron and three free throws from Josh Smith and Dylan Dominique.

Smith scored a game-high 22 points, including nine the third quarter. Depron added 14.

Angelle led STM with 10 points.
