Dominant Third Quarter Propels Beavers to Saturday Win

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State outscored Jackson State 19-6 in a game-breaking third quarter and carried that momentum into a 63-53 victory inside Gill Coliseum.
The oldest and youngest players on the roster paced the Beavs throughout the game. Freshmen Martha Pietsch and Raegan Beers both scored in double figures with 14 and 10 points respectively. Beers also had her fifth double-double of the season with 12 rebounds.
Redshirt senior Bendu Yeaney contributed on both ends with four points, eight rebounds, four assists and a career-best six steals in her 137th career start. Yeaney's stops were crucial as OSU shot just 31.3 percent from the floor. The Beavs made up for it with defense and by grabbing a season-high 19 offensive rebounds.
The game changed in the third quarter. After heading into the break trailing 26-21, Oregon State won the third quarter 19-6, including a 13-3 run midway through. In 52 seconds, Shalexxus Aaron got the Gill Coliseum crowd on their feet by tying the game at 30 with a wing three-pointer before giving OSU the lead off a Yeaney steal and assist.
Jackson State needed time, but it wasn't enough as Jelena Mitrovic scored five points in an 8-2 run to close the quarter and put the Beavs up 40-32 entering the fourth. Mitrovic finished the game with 13 points and nine rebounds, one shy of her second straight double-double.
Oregon State went back to the big Serbian in the fourth quarter. She delivered with eight points and two assists in the final ten minutes to help fend off a scrapy JSU team. Talia von Oelhoffen found her stroke in the fourth as well, scoring six points while nailing four big free throws down the stretch.
The Beavs struggled to find their shot early in the game, making just 25 percent of their attempts in the first half. Pietsch and Beers provided crucial points to keep OSU in the game, scoring five and six respectively while both made 2-of-3 shots.
OSU opens Pac-12 play next week at Oregon. The game is slated for a 4 p.m. tip on Sunday, December 11. It will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
