Tokunaga, Retsky earn All-American status

Awards keep piling up for the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo women’s soccer team, with Daelenn Tokunaga and Lolo Retsky earning All-American status.

Tokunaga and Retsky were both named to the Division 2 Conference Commissioners Association All-America Third Team. Tokunaga also was named a United Soccer Coaches Division II All-America First Team selection.

The Vulcans were unbeaten during the regular season on the way to a Pacific West Conference Championship and hosting bid for the NCAA Division II West Regional. UH-Hilo finished the 2022 season 13-1-3 overall, with an exit in the second round of the West Region tournament.

Tokunaga, a fifth-year midfielder from Waipahu, O‘ahu, started in 14 of the matches she played in, totaling six goals and seven assists for 19 points. She netted two game-winning goals, the first in a 2-0 win against Chaminade on Sept. 23 and later in a 3-0 victory against Biola on Oct. 22. Tokunaga scored a season-high four points on two goals in a 4-0 win against Holy Names on Oct. 18.

She was ranked No. 17 in assists per game, No. 34 in total assists and No. 79 in points per game in the end-of-regular-season NCAA DII rankings.

Retsky, a freshman goalkeeper from Calabasas, Calif., started in 14 matches, finishing with a 10-0-3 record at goal, allowing just five goals during the season. She posted six individual shutouts with three additional combined team shutouts. Retsky had a season-high five saves in a 1-0 win against Stanislaus State on Sept. 10. She also was a two-time Pacific West Conference Defender of the Week for Sept. 5-11 and Sept. 12-18.

Retsky was No. 4 in goals-against average and No. 28 in save percentage in the end-of-regular-season NCAA DII rankings.
