It’s that time of year in Northern Michigan, the ski slopes are open!

Treetops Resort in Gaylord opened for the season on Saturday and many were seen grabbing their skis and heading to the slopes.

Paul Beachnau with the Gaylord Area Convention and Tourism Bureau was excited to head to the slopes this winter.

“We love the fall colors and all the wonderful things about fall here in Northern Michigan,” Beachnau said. “But then when the snow turns everything to white, we’re ready to hit the slopes.”

Skiers and snowboards gathered for opening day at Treetops Resorts.

“It’s always the most exciting day when we have enough snow to open up the slopes,” said Beachnau. “We love winter up here. We love winter in Gaylord in Northern Michigan. So it’s really an exciting day.”

The slopes are one of the big attractions to Northern Michigan. The winter weather starting up attracts many travelers to the resort.

“The winter travel season is such an important part of the annual travel season,” said Nick Nerbonne of Pure Michigan. “With the snowflakes falling here in Gaylord, we’re excited to get the winter off to a great start.”

Treetops isn’t just a destination resort for those from far away, it also attracts snowboarders from just right down the road.

One group says they’ve been going here for four years.

“It’s the closest place,” they said. “It’s the best place around.”

Lessons are available at Treetops Resort for those who want to get in on the fun.

Beachnau says the instructors at Treetops are fun and they’ll have you on the slopes in no time.
