WORCESTER -- Two people have died after a crash in Worcester overnight. It happened near 982 Grafton Street just around 12:20 a.m. on Saturday. Police said the driver was trying to avoid capture.

Police responded on Water Street for a report of an assault with a gun. When they arrived, they were told that two men had been walking along the street when they were nearly hit by a Toyota Highlander. One of the men waved his arms at the drive. The driver stopped his vehicle and pointed a gun at the man. The victim called 911 and got into his own car and began following the Toyota.

When police arrived at the scene, they were told the Toyota had pulled over at the intersection of Grafton and County streets. Police arrived at the scene and told the driver to turn the car off, which he did. They told the driver to step out of the car, and the driver turned the car back on and sped off.

One officer, who was still in his vehicle, gave chase and found a truck that had been in a crash and they Toyota flipped in the road in front of Roosevelt School. Seven people were trapped in the Highlander. Six people were transported to the hospital. One 34-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The 35-year-old male driver was pronounced dead at the hospital.

In the vehicle, officers found a black pellet gun made to look like a Glock 19 handgun.

Police said along with the fatalities, there were "other serious injuries."

The Crash Reconstruction Unit is still investigating. Early reports said the Toyota was speeding when the driver hit the curb, lost control and crossed the double yellow line, hitting a Dodge Ram, striking a tree and flipping over.

The victims have not been publicly identified.
