On Friday morning, it was announced that the New York Mets signed relief pitcher, Jimmy Yacabonis to a minor-league contract.

For the Mets, yet another bullpen arm now added at this early point in the offseason.

It started with the re-signing of Edwin Diaz right off the bat of free agency. The team made a trade acquiring two bullpen arms from the Miami Marlins in, Elieser Hernandez and Jeff Brigham. Also, the team has claimed Stephen Ridings and signed Denyi Reyes to a minor-league deal as well.

Clearly, the biggest weakness the Mets had a year ago has been a top priority this offseason.

What to know about New York Mets’ new RP Jimmy Yacabonis:

Yacabonis is from New Jersey. He is still young at 30 years old. Yacabonis has gained five years of experience since 2017 with the Baltimore Orioles, Seattle Mariners, and he spent 2022 with both the Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays.

Likely one of the reasons the Mets opted to sign Yacabonis is because of his past experience with Buck Showalter from the Orioles. The two spent two years together with the team.

He is a right-hander with 71 games of experience. Yacabonis offers size at 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds. His career ERA to date is poor, though, at 6.03.

For the Mets, this is yet another arm they are hoping to possibly just get something out of. Knowing all the help the Mets’ relief pitching needs, it makes sense to just keep acquiring and building depth.
