SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Get ready for another windy weather maker! This system will also bring a cold front with a batch of heavy rain. Then lake effect snow develops behind it.
Let's start with the alerts. There are Wind Advisories for Onondaga County and areas west and north. High Wind Warnings for Jefferson County and the Rochester to Buffalo area. This is where the strongest winds will be.
Wind speeds will be around 20-30 MPH, with gusts up to 50 MPH. The strongest winds will be midday. This is when we have the best chance to see power outages and small trees downed. Plus, this will create hazardous travel conditions.
Plus, there's a Lakeshore Flood Warning for the shoreline of Oswego and Jefferson counties this afternoon to evening with a strong west wind.
The reason for the strong wind is a cold front. This arrives in CNY midday today. Which will bring a line of heavy rain and strong winds, changing from south to west as this front moves through.
High temperatures will be in the lower 50s midday, sinking into the 40s in the afternoon and 30s by the evening. It will still be windy in the evening, but not as strong. Also, lake effect rain/snow showers will develop in the afternoon to evening, changing all over to snow showers by late evening as temperatures drop below freezing.
These lake effect snow showers will bring accumulation to Oswego, Oneida, and Northern Onondaga Counties by early Sunday. Then the lake effect snow drifts north and tapers off by midday Sunday.
Here's how much snowfall is possible. Around a trace to a coating for the hills south of Syracuse, an inch of two in Oswego and Oneida counties, up to 3-4" under the steadiest and bands in eastern Oswego and Northern Oneida counties.
