Holland Museum to launch 'folk art' exhibit in December

HOLLAND — Holland Museum has announced its newest exhibit: "Storied Objects: Folk Art."

The collection will explore rarely seen folk art, including quilts, pottery, puppets, carving and basketweaving. It begins Friday, Dec. 9.

“We look forward to exploring this important art form with visitors through the work we have in our collection,” said Holland Museum Executive Director Ricki Levine.

According to a statement from the museum: "Folk art spans every culture across the globe, merging the utilitarian with the decorative, and reflects the heart of the community from which it comes. Every piece has a story; an artist behind the piece, the culture from which it came, and a purpose."

The museum said folk art is "broad" and can be "difficult to define" by a specific time period or style.

"Many folk artists are self-taught or have developed their skills through apprenticeships and community learning," the organization wrote. "While fine artists are traditionally more concerned with the ‘rules’ of art, afolk artist may be less concerned with the style, and instead focuses on expressing their values and cultural identity through their work."

The exhibit will remain on display until mid-April, with themed events in March.
