UNLV journalists will not have to stop the press after securing enough funding to keep the paper going.
The Nevada Board of Regents approved a student fee to help fund The Scarlet and Gray Free Press.
When the Las Vegas Review-Journal announced it would cut back its $40,000 annual funding to the paper, the students of Scarlet and Gray Free Press proposed a new funding option.
Beginning next fall, UNLV students will contribute less than $3 per semester to generate a total of about $143,000 a year for the school paper.
Vanessa Booth, the paper's editor-in-chief, says she and the journalists first had to convince others of the importance of the paper.
"We had to essentially give a presentation, we had to lobby the Senators within Student Government, and you know, go out to the campus and say, 'Hey, would you be in support?'" Booth said.
Booth and the team of journalists are ready to get back to work.
They have plans to expand their team and purchase more equipment.
