Now open and coming soon: Four Birmingham-area restaurants to know

Velma's, Teaspoon, Lady E's, and Uptown Jazz are four new Birmingham-area openings.

With holiday season underway, news of restaurant openings and closings can get lost in the fervor. In case you missed the latest news, Birmingham has a new spot for bubble tea, as well as a new jazz lounge. Down the line, an old favorite will reopen its doors in Trussville, and one of the most popular wing joints in Birmingham is moving to a new location. Here are four Birmingham-area spots to have on your radar.

NOW OPEN

TEASPOON

Ono Poké chef and restaurateur Vinh Tran has expanded his portfolio with the opening of Teaspoon bubble tea café, marking the franchise’s first location in the Southeast. The restaurant, which opened on Dec. 1 at The Summit, combines a menu of fresh flavors with traditional boba tea. [HERE’S A LOOK AT THE MENU]

UPTOWN JAZZ

Uptown Jazz, the new jazz lounge from Rod Conwell, Patrick Chatman, Patrick Chatman II and Larry Forest, opened to the public in November in Birmingham’s Uptown entertainment district. Last month, the lounge hosted a roster of musicians including Chuck & Friends and Huntsville-based band, Sophisticated.

The venue temporarily closed on Dec. 1 to fix maintenance issues, but reopening plans include partnerships with local food vendors, happy hour, and open mic nights every first and third Tuesday of the month.

COMING SOON

VELMA’S

Velma's, on Gadsden Highway in Trussville, closed in 2012, but a couple is looking to reopen it next year. (Velma's)

Velma’s on Gadsden Highway in Trussville closed its doors in 2012. Now, ten years later, a couple is looking to reopen the Trussville institution known for its cold beer and burgers off the grill. Tammy and Royce Butler are hoping to welcome the public back to the restaurant in February or March, after permitting and renovations are completed. The Butlers are also busy recreating the retro-feel of the menu, which featured fare such as a fried bologna sandwiches.

The restaurant was acquired by Sosa Restaurant Partners in June, according to a report from the Birmingham Business Journal. Anthony Johnson is a majority owner in the business and Andrea Parker is a managing partner who also manages the day-to-day operations at Lady E’s, reports the Birmingham Business Journal.
