Digimon Survive sales pass major milestone after less than half a year

Global Digimon Survive sales have surpassed 500,000 copies, Bandai Namco and developer Hive announced on Twitter. The Digimon visual novel first launched in July 2022, less than six months ago, making this one of the more popular and successful Digimon games in recent years.

For reference, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth and its sequel sold 1.5 million copies worldwide as of October 2020. Both games originally launched in Japan in 2015 before seeing staggered releases in Europe and North America on PS4 and the PS Vita and then on Nintendo Switch in 2019. Digimon Survive launched simultaneously worldwide on all platforms.

As a tactical RPG and visual novel hybrid, Digimon Survive was a departure for the series, which usually alternates between games focused on monster taming and more traditional JRPGs like the Cyber Sleuth games. It also adopted a darker tone than most Digimon games, delving into the tortured psyches of its main cast as they struggled to return from the digital world alive.

Whether Hive will get to make another game in the same style is uncertain. The next brand-new Digimon game will return to the series’ taming-and-breeding roots as a Digimon World game, though Bandai is also porting Digimon World: Next Order to Nintendo Switch and PC in February 2023.
