Dolores Bjorbach: A co-owner of Edmonds’ Sound Styles, she had a lifelong love of music
Dolores Ruth Bjorback, 93, went to be with Jesus January 19, 2023. Born May 13,1929 in Everett, WA to Emil and Thora Quinnell, Dolores lived several places while growing up during the depression, namely Woodinville, Joyce, Carnation and Piedmont, WA. In 1940 the family moved to Bremerton where she later graduated High School in 1947. She met the love of her life, Ollie Bjorback, while attending Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA. They were married two days after graduation in 1952 and spent their honeymoon in Walla Walla canning peas. The couple settled in the Seattle area and built a home in Edmonds in 1960 where they raised their family.

Foundation for Edmonds School District partners with Rotary Club of Lynnwood to manage scholarships for graduating seniors
The Foundation for Edmonds School District said it is partnering with the Rotary Club of Lynnwood and the Lynnwood Rotary Community Foundation to award academic scholarships. In 2010, the Martha Lake Community Club provided a generous gift to the Lynnwood Rotary Community Foundation, which includes awarding multiple vocational, trade school, and academic scholarships.

Edmonds K9 Hobbs to retire after decade of police service
After nearly 10 years of service, the Edmonds Police Department’s K9 Hobbs will retire on Jan. 26. Hobbs has partnered with Sgt. Jason Robinson since 2013, and together they have served the city and region with more than 500 deployments, the Edmonds Police Department said in a news release announcing Hobbs’ departure. Hobbs has apprehended approximately 166 suspects and located 113 items of evidence during his tenure.

Edmonds Arts Commission issues call for youth, adult poetry submissions
The City of Edmonds Arts Commission (EAC) seeks submissions of short poems to be displayed in temporary poetry poster installations at various city locations. The goal is to surprise and delight the public with thoughtful short pieces of poetry that create a literary link connecting the reader to a sense of place of our Puget Sound region. Poetry topics might reference, but are not restricted to, connections to environment, habitat, nature, sustainability, history or other cultural aspects of our local community.

Under the weather: Mix of showers, sun and cold expected for last weekend of January
We’re already about to wrap up the month of January — that’s right, we’re almost one-twelfth of the way through 2023. Time to start preparing for 2024… just kidding. Over the past week or so, the rate of rainfall at Paine Field has slowed down from what we have seen for most of the month. As I reported in last week’s article, we were 0.84 inches above average for rainfall, but as of writing this, we are only 0.17 inches above average — the gap has closed a bit.

Scene in Edmonds: King tide — what a difference a month makes
On Dec. 27, the king tide was at 12.4 feet at 8:40 a.m., photographer Doug Parrott recalled. “The atmospheric conditions (low pressure and high winds) caused moderate flooding conditions on beaches and nearby Edmonds roads,” he said. On Tuesday, Jan. 24, the king tide was at 12.6 feet at 7:22 a.m. The atmospheric conditions — high pressure and no wind — had no impact on beaches and nearby roads, Parrott added.

Scene in Edmonds: New signs on the waterfront
Photographer Bob Sears came across these two City of Edmonds parks maintenance workers working with a sign at the Edmonds waterfront. We asked the City of Edmonds for further details, and Edmonds Arts and Culture Manager Frances Chapin explained that the city installed two new signs Wednesday. The photo above shows the workers looking at options for placement, but the sign actually ended up elsewhere, Chapin said. The photo below shows the installed signage.

Aud Böning: An avid reader, she enjoyed camping, boating, skiing and travel
Aud Böning was born in Oslo, Norway and passed away in Edmonds, WA with her husband and daughters by her side. After graduating from Oslo Cathedral School, she worked for a law firm in Oslo. In her 20’s, she traveled around Western Europe before taking a job as an Au Pair in Paris, while also attending business school there.
